A Collector’s Delight: Anne Geddes Dolls

Anne is renowned for her mastery in photographing babies amid sophisticated, one-of-a-kind settings that emit a feeling of joy and protection. Anne broke out like the pupae from her ‘Beginnings’ collection when she hooked up with sculptor Laura Tuzio-Ross. In 2007, motivated by her exceptional vision, the two artists created the Anne Geddes dolls collection.

Anne Geddes: A Humanitarian
In her Australian youth, Anne admired the images displayed in National Geographic and Life. Her photography not only acquired the same remarkable edge of quality, but also borne out of this fascination was a sense of humanitarianism that led Anne towards her desire to protect children from neglect and abuse. She once said, “My imagery will help to create a strong platform of hope and promise for humanity and the future".

The Making of Anne Geddes Dolls By seeking the best in people, Anne seeks to create the best. Attention to detail is typical of Anne, who goes to great lengths, in terms of time and effort, to produce nothing but perfection. She carefully establishes the desired, peaceful atmosphere, and then readies mom and baby for a photo. She ultimately uses photography techniques reserved for craftspeople of earlier times. Thereafter, her partner, Laura Tuzio-Ross, individually crafts the physical form of the doll.

Anne Geddes dolls are based on many of Anne’s famous prints, both in their position and presentation. Each doll comes with its own collectable box in Anne Geddes branding, and includes a certificate of authenticity. Each doll has a custom number to distinguish them from one edition to the next.

A new doll is swept off the market as soon as there is news of its release. Whether or not the dolls instantly become a collector’s item is typically unknown, but their unique craftsmanship will undoubtedly place them in someone’s collection in the future.

Woodland Fairy Doll
The very first Anne Geddes doll, ‘Woodland Fairy’, was appropriately released with Anne’s biography ‘Labour of Love’. Based on one of the images from the Woodland Fairy series, it is an exact replica in 3D that captures the serene nature of the photographic print. The doll’s body is made of cloth with sculpted limbs and an adorable, sleeping face that makes you either want to return to the womb or have a baby. On January 25th 2008, Anne’s Woodland Fairy doll was one of the winners in the 2008 Doll of the Year Choice competition. “The award is a very nice acknowledgment to the care and attention that is taken in producing each and every doll”, said Geddes.

A Bit about Laura Tuzio-Ross
Anne’s partner, Laura Tuzio-Ross, is a big fan of Geddes and feels honoured to work with her. Laura was born in New Jersey and, like Geddes, had a passion for babies from a very young age. A trained fashion illustrator, she started making life-like dolls when she discovered sculpture. She is skilled in forming moulds out of resin, vinyl and silicone, materials used in her own personal work as well as in the Anne Geddes dolls collection. The manufacturing of the series of dolls was done by Blackall Associates Inc, famous for their MasterPiece dolls collection.

In addition to their exclusive choice of dimensionality, Laura and Ann differ in their artwork. Laura is focussed on the realism of her art and does not shy away from baby wrinkles. In fact, the folds are rather prominent in sculpture. On the other hand, Anne creates a particular softness in her dolls; there exists a filtered quality to her work that smoothes the wrinkles. The combination of their talents has produced dolls that are not only meticulous in detail, but also life-like and lovable - a doll collector’s wish come true.
